(Processionary caterpillar)
The processionary caterpillar also known as «Thaumetopoea pityiocampa», can cause serious public health problems. Due to stinging action of its hairs, these can cause allergies on human and pets. The allergic reactions are mostly in the skin, eyes and respiratory system. It can cause weakening and vertigo and in extreme situations it can cause death.
Preventing is best remedy!
If you have pine trees near your house or close to your pets, it is possible you have processionary caterpillar around. Preventing is a priority.
As it is impossible to detect if a large pine tree is infested with caterpillar eggs, the consequences of not preventing it are a lot higher than the cost of prevention.
The best time to apply a biological insecticide to fight the plague is between the 15th September and the 15th November.
You did not prevent nor detect the processionary caterpillar on your pine trees or in your garden?
A lot of people don’t know or care about this plague. It is only when they find out the different allergies caused by the caterpillars or when their pets have to be rushed to the vet with advanced necroses, that people give some importance to the matter.
In these cases, you can always start fighting against the caterpillar, that is, minimize the risks, by placing a trap that catches the caterpillar when it tries to come down the pine tree.
The most likely time for this to happen is between the 15th January and the 30th March.
